How To Recruit Good Toy Sales People

There are many features of selling Toys which are the same as selling other products. But there are some distinctive and specific features of selling in the Toy business, and therefore there are particular recruitment criteria for successful Toy sales people.

Firstly, while existing customer relationships can apply across many industries, it becomes particularly important to be able to leverage buyer relationships when you are selling new products each year and need to get them placed.

Another major challenge in the Toy business is the difficulty in forecasting Sales volumes in a category entirely driven by the whims of parents and kids! Good sales people are not just good at bringing in the Sales, they are also normally better at reading their retailers and their potential stock intakes to allow for more effective inventory management.

The third element of being successful in selling Toys is in dealing with difficult buyers and dealing with them during difficult situations i.e. when a product fails and the retailer is demanding promotional funding to clear the slow moving inventory, or when there is a product recall or legal issue with a product.

None of these elements of being successful at selling Toys can be assessed in an informal shallow conversation. The interviewer needs to ask structured questions and run scenarios by the candidate for closer to real assessment and feedback as to the capability of the applicant.

Due to our long experience selling to Toy retailers and managing Toy Sales teams, we are better able to truly assess the capabilities of applicants.
